Earlier we have made a temporary solution to remove unknown disc drive appearing suddenly in your windows explorer. The drive may be appearing again after the temporary fix.

Now we have came up with a permanent solution after taking all the feedback from our users. We have also made our first video tutorial considering the requests we received to fix the issue more easily and to understand the process step – by – step more clearly.

Please proceed with the following steps so that the issue can be resolved.

NOTE: Always make a backup of you data. We are not responsible for any damage or loss occurs due to wrong configuration changes. Proceed at your own risk even though we have tested this is safe and helps removing the unnecessary disks appearing in your explorer.

  1. Press Win+R – Type “regedit” and click OK.
  2. Now navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
  3. Right click on the right pane – New – 32 bit Dword and enter the name as “NoDrives” or
Right click on the right pane – New – 64 bit Qword and enter the name as “NoDrives“.
  4. Now double click it and select “decimal” and then enter the value as 33554432.
  5. Now navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
  6. Repeat the steps 3 & 4
  7. Restart the notebook
  1. I want to delete the system z drive that appeared on my new laptop after a Windows 10 update. I found this on MS site
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-files/windows-10-unknown-system-z-partition-or-disk/f05e3d01-066f-4560-858a-e45da4b04df5?auth=1

But that is way too technical for me to understand. I tried the MS help community but I need an MS account which I don’t want because I don’t trust MS

I found your article, and it seems fairly simple. I have not yet created a flashdrive recovery disc for my laptop. Should I do that first before I try your solution? Is that what you mean when you say in your warning Always Make a Backup of Your Data?

    • Hello,
      Thanks for reaching out here.
We always recommend making a recovery before doing anything with your os or files.
Once you are done with the backup, you can proceed with the permanent fix provided in the video tutorial.
You can find the permanent fix reviews of the users who already done the above from the YouTube comments or the previous temporary fix post.
      Regards,
      Ram

      • I am leaving my comment here because I do not want to register with YouTube to comment. Your video is brilliant. I am very nervous with technology, but your solution to removing the System Z drive was extremely easy for me to do. I watched your video first. Then I watched it again, pausing at each step as I followed your instructions. It was so easy to do, and within just a few minutes that Z drive was removed from my computer. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

  2. Thanks! Looks like your solution works and the Z drive stays hidden. Can you explain more precisely what actually is going on when I use your fix?

    • Hi Svesvi,
The above trick is to hide the drive only, you should not delete the drive. The issue is with Windows and HP Support software. HP not gave any permanent fix yet. Until then you can just use the above procedure to hide the drive (Also note that you need to do restart if you find the drive appears again after you install the Windows or HP software update)

      Thanks

  3. Ups! Hold back my previous comment about your fix is working. It is not working. I did a reinstallation of HP support assistance and the the z-drive returned. So it’s not a permanent fix you found.

    • great work. i uninstalled HP software update and it went away. No need for extra partitions and the like just to have a printer

    • Hi Simon,
We also found the same after apply the fix.
You must restart your device in such case. The Z: will be hidden on restart.
We dont suggest to delete the Z: drive, so there is no permanent fix, the drive sometime appears if you open the HP support application. Restarting the device will only help.

  4. The fix in the video only hides the local disk z drive. I’ve noticed that once you have done the steps in this video, if you then click on the blue HP support logo and open up the HP support page, the local disk z drive comes back again.

      • Thanks for your reply.Lets hope that windows or HP support can sort this problem out. Because it means that if you decide that you have to open up the HP support page, then be prepared that the local disk z drive will come back. which means you then have to repeat the process in the video supplied to temporarily get rid of the local disk drive z again. (SO ANNOYING)

  5. I am using Windows 10 and also partition my hard disk after that showing Local Disk Z ,i follow your step but not solved, Please explain me ,how to solved this problem.
